So many ways to get started

2017 Price Breaks

Greetings Big Brothers and Big Sisters!

As always, thank you for your time and dedication to Big Brothers Big Sisters as a volunteer. The time you spend with your "Little" is very important to the growth and development of your mentoring relationship, and we here at Big Brothers Big Sisters want to encourage you to continue to have fun and explore various activities with your "Little". To ease the expense of taking your Little on excursions, Big Brothers Big Sisters has made arrangements with a number of local businesses to provide discounts for our volunteers. Please also be sure to check out the new sections to this year's listing to find other activities that are no to very low cost activities- many of which you already have the supplies for lying around your home!

When using any of the special discounts listed below, please be sure to remember the following:

1. These discounts are for your and your "Little" only
2. These discounts can only be used for dine-in orders
3. Please identify yourself as a "Big" immediately, by showing your Big Brothers Big Sisters Identification Card, to avoid any misunderstandings. Please contact us at 888-456-1600, if you are in need of a new card.

We are continuously working to bring you a wide variety of discounts and activities near you. If you know of a business who would like to provide a discount, please contact Dametria Refner at dametria.refner@bbbsnei.org.

Please select a county or category below to view discounts offered in your area!

Get Outdoors!!

Take time to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors!

Go on a Scavenger Hunt: Be creative and create your own list of items to search for such as a smooth stone or red leaf. You can also find GPS Scavenger Hunts online and search for different landmarks and checkpoints using GPS coordinates.

Plant a Garden: Work together to plant your favorite veggies and flowers and watch them grow and then enjoy the results.

Go Fishing: You can use professional equipment or make your own using a stick, fishing line and a hook.

Have a Picnic in the Park: Pack your favorite snacks and foods and spend the day at the park.

Make an obstacle course: Use items you already have on hand and take turns going through the course.

Run Errands: The trick will be to involve your Little in the errands. Take your time and discuss what you are doing.

Make Snow Art: Using colored water in spray bottles, spray some freshly fallen snow and make a beautiful work of art.

Play Hopschotch, Jump Rope, or Hula Hoop: Take a step back in time and enjoy some outdoor fun the old fashioned way.

Catch Lightning Bugs: Don’t forget to put some holes in the lid of your jar so your new friends can breathe.

Go Hiking, Walking or Biking: Go to a park and use the trails, or just explore your neighborhood.

Make Chalk Drawings: Have fun drawing on the sidewalk. Use chalk you purchase at the store or you can make your own. Visit our website (www.bbbsnei.org) for the recipe.

In the Car!

Make car rides more fun with these game ideas!

Letter Search: Search for letters as you drive. Look on street signs, license plates, billboards, etc. Go through the whole alphabet in order, or use letters in your names to see who can find letters the fastest.

I Spy: Take turns giving clues and looking for objects along the way. Just be sure the game doesn’t run you off the road!

Out of State License Plate Search: See who can spot and call out the out-of-state license plate first. You can also see who can spot the most out-of-state plates.

Sing Along: Singing along to a CD or the radio. Just be sure that whatever you are singing along to is parent approved and appropriate.

20 Questions: Take turns thinking of a person, place or thing and then the other person asks simple yes or no questions until they are able to guess the person, place or thing.

Communication & Scenario Cards: This is a great way to break the ice and have fun having what could be difficult conversations. Cut out the cards found on page 17, place in a jar with a lid. Have your Little give it a shake and pull out a card. Take turns answering the questions. Encourage your Little to really think his or her answers and don’t be afraid to come up with follow up questions to the answers they give.

Spot the Car: This is a variation of the Out of State License Plate Search above, however instead of states you will be searching for different car brands.

Theme Song Game: Take turns humming TV Theme Songs and guessing what show the song is from.

Fun Indoors!

Have fun indoors with these great activity ideas!

Board Games: Get out the classics and have some fun. You can also find games online , such as Mancala, that are easy to make and fun to play.

Origami: Have fun making paper shapes and figures. Search the web or visit our site for a link to instructions.

Paper Football Competition: Make paper footballs and take turns seeing who can make the most goals.

Put a Puzzle Together: Puzzles are even more fun when you do them with someone else.

Make a Fort: This is the perfect activity for any rainy day! Use blankets, chairs, tables, pillows, etc. After it’s completed, find an activity to do inside like read a book or play a game.

Write or tell Stories: Use your imagination to create an imaginary world and act it out or write it down and illustrate it.

Paper Airplane Contest: Make different shapes of paper airplanes and test them out to see which design flies the best.

Visit the Library: Pick out books to read aloud to one another, or choose a chapter book to read at the same time at home, and talk about what you’ve read.

Learn Card Tricks: Grab a deck of cards and look up different card tricks online or find a book of card tricks at the library.

Cook: Even if you don’t cook, you and your Little will have fun trying new things even if the food doesn’t come out edible. Cooks.com is a great place to look up recipes online.

Arts & Crafts

Have some fun with these great craft ideas!

Paint Rocks: You’ll both have fun painting rocks. All you need is some paint, brushes and a few rocks.

Collages: Save a few old magazines and then you and your Little can go through them to find words and pictures that reflect yourselves and then discuss why you selected the words and images you did.

Jewelry Making: Create custom jewelry using string and beads.

Ocean in a Bottle: Fill a soda bottle a little less than half way with baby oil, and then fill the rest with water and add a little food coloring. Put the lid on tight. When you turn the bottle on the side it will move like an ocean. You can even add something that will float and it will look like it’s riding the waves.

Match Treasure Box: Decorate an old shoe box to reflect what you and your Little like, then as your match goes on, collect items from outings you go on (photos, drawings, etc.) and put them in your treasure box. It’s a great keepsake and your Little will always have reminders of the fund activities you did together.

Build & Paint a Birdhouse: You and your Little will love to watch the birds that take up residence in the house you build and decorated for them!

Sand Art: Start with an empty food jar and colored sand. Pour layers of different sand into the jar. Make different patters by moving the jar from side to side and adjust the layer’s thickness. The best way to seal it is with a little bit of melted wax to cover the opening.

Tie-Dye a T-Shirt: This is a great way to make an old shirt feel new again...and cover up those old BBQ stains.
