So many ways to get started
College Success Mentoring
Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to helping youth fulfill their potential by achieving their dreams of attaining a college degree. We match each student in the program with a college-educated, volunteer adult mentor whose job is to help walk their student into college. Currently, fifty 10th-12th grade students from East Allen County Schools are participating in the program. Funded by the Indiana Youth Institute in a partnership with the Indiana Department of Education, the programs seeks to allow students who quality for the free tuition offered by the 21st Century Scholars Programs, additional support and resources through agencies such as Big Brothers Big Sisters who can help them build a relationship with a trained adult mentor.
The achievement of academic goals of promising, economically disadvantaged students is one of the region’s greatest needs. According to a study done in 2009 by America's Promise Alliance, only 30 percent of urban high school students graduate. Each dropout costs the state of Indiana about $3,000 a year for the rest of their lives; a great public cost at a time when economic growth and development, as well as a well-educated workforce, are of paramount importance.
