Be a "Big"

Single or married, parent or grandparent, if you are eighteen or older, you may qualify for one of our programs. You don't have to be wealthy. You are not expected to spend a lot of money on entertainment. It is expected that you will have the dedication to form a lasting relationship. Our volunteers have one thing in common; the willingness to help kids through understanding and commitment. VOLUNTEER PROCESSING STEPS *

 

1.           APPLICATION

Take time to carefully complete the application.  Read the paragraphs on the back and sign and print your name on the bottom of the last page.  Return the application to us in the enclosed envelope, or via e-mail.  An application which has been e-mailed will be signed by you as a volunteer at the interview. 

 

2.         INTERVIEW

The interview will be scheduled with you as soon as possible.  This interview will include a brief orientation, signing of police check consents, the interview. The interview, usually completed at the most convenient location for the volunteer, will last about 1 ½ hours.  We also ask that you supply us with your driver’s license and proof of auto insurance which meets State minimum requirements.

 

3.         NOTIFICATION OF DECISION ON INVOLVEMENT

When the screening process is completed, you will be notified in a letter or by phone of the decision regarding your involvement with the agency. Agency policy prohibits the disclosure of information related to this decision.  

 

5.         MATCHING

Once a volunteer is approved the Enrollment Team arranges a match. A match meeting may occur at the youth's home, in our office, or other appropriate place determined by Enrollment. The purpose of the match meeting is to introduce the volunteer, youth, and youth’s family.

 

6.         CASE MANAGEMENT FOLLOW-UP

Throughout your involvement in our program, the Match Support Team will be in touch on a regular basis.  Most of the contact will be by phone with periodic in-person contacts.  Match Support offers professional support to matches and families.  First Friends volunteers will stay in contact with the First Friends Coordinator for any additional training and follow up. Match Support will alternate follow-up with Big Couple volunteers.

 

7.         TRAINING

Volunteers are asked to attend a training session within 6 months of their match.  Training will be offered quarterly or as needed, and will cover areas that you feel would be beneficial.
