Our Agency
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a not-for-profit organization designed to meet the needs of at-risk children and youth through our Community based and site based programs, Big Couples and First Friends. Countless children today find themselves in one-parent families in which the custodial parent is often stretched. In such families, many needs may go unmet. By providing children with caring adult role models and mentors, the program helps kids find their way in an increasingly complex world.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is an affiliated agency of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which is the nation’s foremost mentoring program for children. But that means very little without the help of adult volunteers. More than ever before kids need caring competent adults in their lives—adults who can help guide them through the crucial years from seven to 17. With so many negative influences pressing on today’s kids, having a positive adult role model is an important factor in how children fare in life, now and in the future.
In "Making a Difference: An Impact Study of Big Brothers/Big Sisters", a national study by Public/Private Ventures recently concluded that youths in a Big Brother Big Sister match are much more likely to stay in school and out of trouble than are their peers on the waiting list. Specifically, Littles are up to 70 percent less likely to start using drugs, 50 percent less likely to initiate alcohol use and almost one-third less likely to hit someone.
Big Brothers Big Sisters serves Adams, Allen, DeKalb,
Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wells and Whitley counties
in Indiana and Branch and St. Joseph counties in Michigan. The agency is
governed by a volunteer Board of Directors representative of Big
Brothers Big Sisters of service territory. Our
professional staff is dedicated to serving our clients, our volunteers,
and our community.
